John Wetteland Hospitalized

Seattle Mariners bullpen coach John Wetteland is resting at home after a hospital stay because of what Denton County officials called a "mental health issue."

"My wife and I are very appreciative of the over and above care of our local officers and paramedics," he said in a statement released by the team Thursday night. "The circumstances leading to my elevated blood pressure and heart rate have been addressed."

An earlier report on the team's website said police responded to a man who may have been suicidal. When officers got to Wetteland's home, he exited his house with his hands in the air, pleading for help.

The 43-year-old Wetteland picked up 330 career saves in 12 seasons in the majors. He was selected MVP of the 1996 World Series with the Yankees.

Wetteland retired from playing in 2000 while with the Rangers, staying in the North Texas area while working as a coach for Liberty Christian School in Argyle, as well as coaching at the professional level with the Rangers, Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said the team was relieved that Wetteland was back at home.
